Founded in the 11th century in Jerusalem, the Order has been fulfilling its mission continuously for more than 900 years. It is not part of any state or international organization, and its independent status gives it a unique diplomatic position to manage international conflicts and provide rapid assistance anywhere in the world. The Order has had its headquarters in Rome since 1834. It has been continuously active in the Czech lands since the 12th century, and the Grand Priory of Bohemia is one of six. The Order aims to help all those in need without distinction. Today, the focus of the Order’s activities is to support and help the elderly, the medically disadvantaged, and other poor and needy people.
